Governor Schwarzenegger To Talk Strike With Producers
Tuesday, 13 November 2007
Hollywood Writers Strike Into Second Week...Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to meet with the group representing Hollywood producers to see if there's anything he can do to help resolve the writers strike. Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said that he doesn't know where the private discussions will take place on Tuesday. The meeting will take place after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers took out full-page ads in trade papers to state their case in the strike by Writers Guild of America. In ads in Monday's Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, studios emphasized that writers already get paid when television episodes and films are downloaded from Internet stores such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes.

The dispute between the WGA and the producers group is over payment for DVD revenues and work that is distributed online

McLear said that Schwarzenegger spoke with writers' representatives on Monday to discuss the labor dispute that is now in its second week.

The spokesman added that the governor is not sure how much the state can participate in negotiations, since federal labor officials would have to take the lead in mediating between the two sides.

The governor has also assigned staff members to meet with federal mediators.

Schwarzenegger's involvement in the talks come after criticism from some of his former acting colleagues.

Ray Romano called out Schwarzenegger to help get the stalled contract talks restarted, noting that most famous lines, including "'I'll be back,'" came from writers.

Strikers Head to Wall Street

In New York Tuesday, striking television and film writers took their fight to the money men Tuesday, marching on Wall Street to complain that the nation's media giants aren't sharing the wealth from their highly touted online efforts.

The strikers, carrying signs and chanting, came to the nation's financial capital as the strike headed into its second week. Among the demonstrators was "Saturday Night Live" star Seth Meyers, holding an "SNL On Strike" sign.

"It seems like the heads of the studios like to come to Wall Street and say how much money they're making online," Meyers said. "Right now, no one has to be Nostradamus to know that in three years, everyone's going to be watching television in a totally different way."
