John Edwards says he has been diagnosed with a medical condition that would make it difficult for him to attend his approaching criminal trial over campaign finances and is asking for it to be delayed. In
a motion filed Thursday, Edwards' lawyers asked a federal judge to
delay the start of the Jan. 30 trial for at least two months. They did
not disclose his illness and filed sealed records with the court. "The Defendant has a medical issue
... that will prevent a trial of this matter during the January 2012
Criminal Term," the motion says. "The failure to grant a continuance
would be likely to result in a miscarriage of justice." Members of the defense team could not immediately be reached for comment. Federal prosecutors did not take a position on the medical issue. However,
prosecutors filed a separate motion opposing another Edwards request
for more time to prepare. Prosecutors said they are ready to try Edwards
on six felony and misdemeanor counts related to nearly $1 million from
wealthy donors used to help hide his pregnant mistress during his 2008
run for the While House. Edwards, a Democrat, denies knowingly violating the law and has pleaded not guilty. Source: ap
The
start date of the trial has already been put back once after Edwards
said he needed more time to prepare his defense and attend his
daughter's wedding. Edwards appeared healthy last week at a pretrial hearing in the case.

A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S.
military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule on Wednesday when two women
sailors became the first to share the coveted "first kiss" on the dock
after one of them returned from 80 days at sea.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, Calif.,
descended from the USS Oak Hill amphibious landing ship and shared a
quick kiss with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of
Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved flags around them.
Both women, ages 22 and 23 respectively, are fire controlmen in the
Navy. They met at training school and have been dating for two years.
Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex
couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return. Sailors and their
loved ones bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity. Gaeta said she
bought $50 of tickets. The Navy said the money would be used to host a
Christmas party for the children of sailors.
The ship returned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story
following an 80-day deployment to Central America. The crew of more
than 300 participated in exercises involving the militaries of Honduras,
Guatemala Colombia and Panama as part of Amphibious-Southern
Partnership Station 2012.
Snell is based on the USS Bainbridge, the guided missile destroyer
that helped rescue cargo captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in
2009.

Matt Damon is expressing his disdain for Barack Obama’s presidency again, this time saying that the President doesn’t have any “balls.”
Once one of Obama’s biggest cheerleaders, Damon slammed the president in a new interview with Elle magazine.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people who worked
for Obama at the grassroots level,” he said. “One of them said to me,
‘Never again. I will never be fooled again by a politician.’
“You know, a one-term president with some
balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of
the country, much better,” he added.

Speaking on the Occupy protests, Damon
added: “"If the Democrats think that they didn't have a mandate --
people are literally without any focus or leadership, just wandering out
into the streets to yell right now because they are so pissed off.
Imagine if they had a leader."
It’s not the first time the Oscar-nominated actor has criticized Obama.

Last year, Damon said Obama “misinterpreted his mandate” by extending the Bush-era tax cuts.
Obama, in response, joked about Damon’s comments at the White House Correspondent’s Ball.
“I've even let down my key core constituency: movie stars.
Just the other day, Matt Damon – I love Matt Damon, love the guy – Matt
Damon said he was disappointed in my performance. Well, Matt, I just
saw "The Adjustment Bureau," so right back atcha, buddy."

A judge called the imprisoned son of actor Michael Douglas reckless and irresponsible as he nearly doubled his prison sentence Wednesday from five years to 9½ years for repeated drug offenses. RELATED: Expensive celeb divorces U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan cited Cameron Douglas' "history of reckless behavior" as he imposed a new punishment that was more than double what prosecutors were seeking for Douglas' guilty plea to drug charges that arose from his successful efforts to smuggle drugs into prison. Berman added 4½ years to the five-year term he gave Douglas last year for his guilty plea in connection with his sales of methamphetamine in July 2009 from a high-end Manhattan hotel. The judge said he had never had a case before in which a defendant "has so recklessly, wantonly, flagrantly and criminally acted in such a destructive and manipulative fashion as Cameron Douglas has." Berman reminded Douglas' lawyers that he had warned at the earlier sentencing that it was the defendant's last chance to turn around a life derailed by drugs and mental troubles stretching into his teenage years. RELATED: Famous celeb offspring The judge also criticized the government for being too lenient on Douglas after he repeatedly violated prison rules by arranging to get drugs. The judge said the violations included four instances in which a lawyer smuggled anti-anxiety prescription drugs into prison for Douglas in her bra. The lawyer entered into a deferred prosecution agreement that enabled the charges against her to be dropped if she stayed out of trouble for six months. The 33-year-old Douglas asked the judge to give him another chance at treatment. "I cannot seem to find comfort within my own skin," he said. "I feel ashamed. I feel defeated. ... I know that I bear in my heart what it will take to overcome this plague." He asked Berman to give him "the room to deal with this situation medically." RELATED: Michael and Catherine and more celeb couples who match His lawyer also requested leniency for his client, saying that his efforts to get drugs in prison were not unusual for a drug addict who had not been rehabilitated. The judge noted at one point that Michael Douglas had told probation authorities that his son had been treated six or seven times for drug addiction, but had not completed the treatments. Berman recommended that Cameron Douglas be sent to a prison facility that can offer him drug treatment and mental health care, although the final decision is let up to the Bureau of Prisons. He also recommended that Douglas be allowed family visits, which have been disallowed since he has been held in solitary confinement for 11 months for violating prison rules. Earlier this year, Douglas testified as part of a cooperation deal with the government at a drug supplier's trial. He said he had been addicted to heroin for five years before his 2009 arrest. The cooperation by the son of the Oscar-winning actor allowed him to escape the mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison that the charges to which he pleaded otherwise required. Yale football coach Tom Williams resigned
Wednesday amid a probe by the university into whether he lied on his
resume about being a candidate for a prestigious Rhodes scholarship, the
New Haven Register reported.
Williams said last month that when he was a
senior linebacker at Stanford in 1992 he was a candidate for a Rhodes
scholarship, but passed up the opportunity in favor of an NFL tryout.
He spoke on the issue while Yale quarterback
Patrick Witt, a Rhodes finalist, debated whether to play in the season
finale against archrival Harvard or miss the game for an interview that
would determine if he obtained the scholarship.
Witt opted to play in the Nov. 19 game, which Yale lost 45-7.
Williams, who turns 42 Thursday, listed on his resume submitted to Yale that he had been a Rhodes finalist.
The university launched an inquiry after The
New York Times reported that the Rhodes Trust, which finances the
scholarship, had no record of Williams ever applying for the
scholarship.
The result of the inquiry has not been made
public. Williams, in a statement announcing his decision, sought to
explain the discrepancy.
"I wish to clear the record," Williams said.
"On the Rhodes Scholarship issue, I was encouraged to apply by the
Stanford Fellowship office, which identified me 'as the kind of student
who demonstrates the intellect, energy and commitment that the Rhodes
selection committees seek in their applicants.' I considered the
opportunity, sought advice and was encouraged to apply by faculty
members and my coach Bill Walsh, but I did not apply.
"I am extremely proud of my academic, athletic and coaching career. If there was confusion created, I take full responsibility," Williams said.
Williams exits with a 16-14 record in three
seasons at Yale. He was hired in 2009 after spending two years as an
assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
His exit is reminiscent of the situation
that quickly sunk George O'Leary's tenure at Notre Dame in 2001.
O'Leary, now the head coach at Central Florida, admitted he had padded
his resume with "inaccuracies" over the years, including a false claim
that he had earned a master's degree. Source: newscore

Sean Penn and actress Maria Conchita Alonso (from The Running Man) had "an angry bust-up" at Los Angeles International Airport
on Sunday. It started when Alonso, who was picking up her mother who
was arriving on a flight from Miami, "spotted Penn in an American
Airlines lost luggage area" and approached him. Alonso, who was born in
Cuba and raised in Venezuela, wrote an open letter to Penn last year
saying she was "appalled" by his support for Hugo Chavez. Alonso recalls
to Page Six what happened next: “I was very calm. I said, ‘I would like
to talk to you.' He said, ‘I have nothing to say to you ... You have
been saying a lot of things about me in the press.’ I said, ‘How can you
defend Chavez?’" Things apparently went downhill from there. Alonso
admits saying "You are a communist Sean Penn." Penn supposedly
responded, "You are a pig!" and Alonso yelled back, "And you are a
communist [bleep]hole! Is it great to live the way you do as a
communist?" According to Alonso, "Nearly 60 people were watching,
shocked. My mother wanted to clap, but she couldn’t because she was in a
wheelchair and she had a small dog in her lap." Penn, for his part,
says that during the incident he "only knew that a hostile woman was
nonsensically berating me. I didn’t realize it was that actress. I think
I worked with her once. But she looks really different." We're not sure
if he'd forget her that easily, considering they once shared a very
steamy, very NSFW canoodling scene in Dennis Hopper's Colors back in 1988. [Page Six]
