LOS ANGELES Kiefer Sutherland pleaded no contest Tuesday in his drunken driving case and will begin serving a 48-day jail sentence while his Fox TV drama "24" begins its winter production break in December. The show's star agreed to serve 30 days for driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of .08 percent, as well as 18 days for violating his probation for a 2004 drunken driving case, according to court records. |

NASSAU, Bahamas -- A lawyer for two women who worked for Anna Nicole Smith said Monday a new book falsely uses them as a source for a claim the former Playboy Playmate's lawyer had a videotaped sexual encounter with her boyfriend. Quethlie Alexis and Nadine Alexie, who worked as nannies for Smith in the Bahamas, never spoke to the author of the book, former MSNBC host Rita Cosby, and never told anyone about any sexual encounter between Smith's lawyer Howard K. Stern and boyfriend Larry Birkhead, attorney Elizabeth Thompson said. |

Last Strike Cost TV Industry $500 Million...LOS ANGELES -- Studios are racing to put more TV shows and movies into production and to stockpile scripts in case there's a writers' strike. And the prospects for that are appearing more likely. Talks between Hollywood writers and studios have abruptly broken off for the weekend, dimming hopes of averting a strike that could cripple the television industry. The Writers Guild of America has been in talks since July with studios represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Negotiations lasted only about an hour yesterday and are not scheduled to resume until Tuesday. |

CHICAGO Oprah Winfrey has picked "Love in the Time of Cholera," the epic love story by Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as her next book club selection."If you love love, this book is the best love story ever," Winfrey said Friday on her daytime talk show. The novel by the Colombian-born Garcia Marquez was published in 1985. Set on the Caribbean coast of South America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it tells the tale of a woman and two men, and an unrequited love that spans 50 years. |

LOS ANGELES Lindsay Lohan has checked out of a drug and alcohol treatment program in Utah that she entered in August, according to People magazine.Lohan, 21, left the Cirque Lodge treatment center on Friday afternoon, the magazine reported on its Web site, citing statements from her parents."I'm proud of her. The timepiece, seized earlier this week by attorneys for Fred Goldman, was ordered returned to the former football star after it was determined to be a knockoff made in China.
