Actor Kiefer Sutherland, who pleaded no contest nearly two months ago to a
misdemeanor drunken driving charge, was sentenced Wednesday to 48 days in the
Glendale city jail. The 40-year-old Emmy Award-winning star of the Fox show "24" -- who was
at the Metropolitan Branch Courthouse in Los Angeles 16 days before his
scheduled sentencing -- was ordered to complete the jail term by March 30,
according to Nick Velasquez of the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office.
Sutherland is expected to serve the entire 48 days behind bars, according to
Velasquez.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stuart Rice also ordered Sutherland to
spend five years on probation, complete an 18-month alcohol program and six
months of weekly therapy sessions and pay a $510 fine.
Sutherland was charged Sept. 28 in connection with his arrest at the
scene of a traffic stop shortly after 1 a.m. Sept. 25 at La Cienega and Beverly
boulevards.
He pleaded no contest Oct. 9 through defense attorney Blair Berk to
driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 percent or above.
Thirty days of Sutherland's jail term stem from the new case, while the
remaining 18 involve a probation violation from a 2004 DUI case, according to
Velasquez.
The Los Angeles-born star was sentenced in 2004 to five years probation,
50 hours of community service and ordered to complete an alcohol program in
connection with a prior DUI arrest.
Sutherland is the son of actor Donald Sutherland, star of the new ABC
series "Dirty Sexy Money," and singer Shirley Douglas.
