Dear Friends of First Star:

I know this letter will disappoint many loyal volunteers and professionals who have been working tirelessly to present the May 30, 2009 First Star Celebration for Children’s Rights and those looking forward to attending the event next week.  Your disappointment is temporary!  The Celebration is crucially important as a fundraising vehicle for First Star’s work on behalf of abused and neglected children nationally.  As the economy has worsened, child abuse and neglect have risen dramatically, fueled by poverty and stress.  So First Star’s work is needed right now more than ever.

We have had dozens of people calling hundreds of people and I personally have made more than 500 phone calls.  We have stellar Honorees and they have also exerted themselves through colleagues, friends and associates to create a head of steam on behalf of the charity.

The reality however is that sponsorships, ticket sales and table sales are down approximately 80% year-on-year.  This means that if we go ahead with the event on May 30, it would put us in the loss column.  Keeping this in mind, the prudent course for First Star and the many children who benefit from our work is to postpone the Celebration.  To hold the event now and guarantee we will lose money does not seem a smart or ethical course.

We hope to stage the Celebration later this year.  We will be monitoring the state of the economy and the availability of sponsorships and donors on a weekly basis.  We will hold the event when we expect it to be roughly as successful as our previous five Celebrations, each of which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for First Star’s children.  We will keep our eye on the ball and keep you informed.

Gratitude to the Honorees, Co-Chairs, Board Members, Trustees, volunteers and professionals who have worked so hard and thank you to the sponsors and donors who have supported us thus far.  We will put your support to good use when we stage the Celebration.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,

Peter Samuelson
President

WHAT IS FIRST STAR? First Star is a national 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to improving th e lives of America’s abused and neglected children. First Star works to change the child welfare system from one of abuse and neglect to one of protection and support. Our bipartisan, multidisciplinary approach fosters collaborative action among organizations, advocates, practitioners and policy-makers working to benefit children.

MISSION First Star’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for meaningful reform of the child welfare system by highlighting critical systemic deficiencies, reporting on the issues, and initiating reform.

VISION First Star works towards a day when children’s voices are heard and their basic civil rights recognized if they must pass through the child protective system.

AAD to Partner with the National Center for Public Research to bring FREE FDA Approved At-Home Diabetes Risk Assessment Tests to 100,000 California School Children
One out of every 4 Children in California is at Risk of Developing Diabetes

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 2, 2009) – The National Center for Public Research announced today its plans to bring 100,000 FDA approved at-home Diabetes Risk Assessment tests to California school children. Healthy Life Laboratories has committed up to $1,000,000 in laboratory testing and reporting services. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are over 60 million Americans at risk of developing diabetes.  Early detection is the key to saving lives.

The Americans Against Diabetes™ Campaign, along with the support of individual and corporate sponsorships, will provide diabetes screening tests to at-risk children and education to their parents. Through awareness and education, informed parents can make healthy choices to reduce their child’s risk of developing diabetes, giving children the healthy future they deserve.

Distribution is planned through local California fire stations, blood banks, school systems, diabetes educators, local dental offices, drug store clinics and other healthcare and civic organizations. With synergistic goals and commitment to healthcare and awareness, The Americans Against Diabetes™ campaign will reach high-risk populations of school age children to provide testing and help educate families about diabetes prevention. The National Center for Public Research will be providing the distribution and financial management of the campaign.

Americans Against Diabetes™ has sought strategic partners to turn this vision into a mission.  “By placing the best diagnostic medical technology in the hands of the dedicated health care professionals who can provide diabetes screening and education, we are confident that this program will succeed,” said Dr. Ron Schefdore, founder of Americans Against Diabetes™.
